Corporate Education Strategy

Imagine Corporate Education as being like an iceberg.

What most organisations see as corporate education is the Formal Education above the water-line. This includes such programs as:

• vocational and technical training programs
• university and higher education programs
• short courses and professional development
• executive education programs
• conferences and seminars

However, below the ‘water-line is the Informal and Workplace Learning. This is the exciting aspect of corporate education where employees interact, reflect and apply what they learn. This includes such learning aspects as:

• effective induction programs to engage employees from Day One
• employee ‘buddy system’
• mentoring
• coaching
• workplace team learning
• participation in special work-based projects
• opportunities to lead work-based projects
• corporate wikis to facilitate employee interaction and retain corporate knowledge
• networking events;social interaction among employees
• and many other learning methods

There is emerging research that finds formal education only accounts for about 20% of corporate learning, but consumes some 80% of the corporate education budget.

Complementing formal education and training is Informal Learning where around 80% of employee learning occurs and consumes less than 20% of the training budget.

As every organisation is unique, every corporate education strategy needs to be customised to blend formal education programs with informal and workplace learning to assist an organisation achieve its corporate goals.
